Sheriff Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) originally worked for the Los Angeles police, but after a botched operation, he ended up as the sheriff of a sleepy town at the Mexican border, Sommerton Junction. Leading a band of incompetent police officers in a quiet backwater, where the most serious crime is picking one's nose, is no great art. Days full of boredom are cut short by a phone call from FBI agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker). During a transport from Las Vegas to a Mexican prison, a dangerous Mexican mafia boss, Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), escaped. Members of his drug cartel freed him during the transport, and he is trying to flee back to his homeland. With the help of his accomplice Burell (Peter Stormare) and a hostage, Cortez speeds away in a souped-up Corvette ZR1 at 250 miles per hour towards the border. The last obstacle on his path to freedom is the sheriff's town. However, the local law enforcement doesn't seem too eager to stand in the way of a man whom the entire FBI cannot handle. Their chief, however, does not want to tarnish his reputation again, so they eventually dust off their armories and pull out rifles, machine guns, and swords, heading into a ruthless slaughter with the aim of stopping the seemingly invincible gangster and his henchmen.
