In a densely populated galaxy, the Alliance rules, formed by the union of the Earth superpowers, the USA and China. War veteran Malcolm Reynolds is the captain of a ship with the idealistic name Serenity. He makes a living as a low-level thief and hired transporter. His crew consists of his loyal friend Zoë, her husband and pilot Wash, mechanic Kaylee, and muscle Jayne. The moment he takes on two new passengers, he finds himself in much bigger trouble than he is prepared for. A young doctor and his sister River, who possesses telepathic abilities, are fleeing from a secret government organization trying to turn the girl into the perfect assassin.
