Description
The main character of The Face – a small-town oddball and eccentric named Jacek – loves heavy metal, his girlfriend, his small car, and his dog. He works at a construction site where the tallest statue of Jesus in the world is set to be built. When a tragic accident unexpectedly leaves him mutilated, the eyes of the entire country turn to him – Jacek becomes the first citizen of Poland to undergo a face transplant. The Face is a detached, unconventional fable about inner strength and beauty, virtuously blending realism, fantastical elements, and dark humor. Szumowska deliberately works with a loose structure, whose unpredictability is further enhanced by refined play with focus. The result is an uncompromising yet exceptionally entertaining study of identity crisis that skillfully shifts from a farcical comedy to a biting social commentary.
