Description
A romantic yet raw and realistic chronicle of pleasure, pain, and passion centers on the characters of sixteen-year-old Adele from a lower-middle-class background and the more experienced, worldly blue-haired fine arts student Emma: their incredibly intense relationship is filled with immediacy, sensuality, impulsive behavior, and tenderness. The film by French-Tunisian auteur Abdellatif Kechiche is a lesbian (and sexually explicit) variation on the archetypal story of consuming first love – loosely inspired by the graphic novel of the same name by Julie Maroh and the sentimental novel Life of Marianne by French moralist Pierre de Marivaux. The phenomenal performances of Léa Seydoux and the previously almost unknown Adele Exarchopoulos ultimately inspired the jury to award the highest honor - the Palme d'Or - to both the director and his muses.
