Description
An exciting story of a Czech young man who joins the French Foreign Legion. A danger of a second war conflict looms over Europe within 20 years. The hero of the book joins the resistance at the age of sixteen. At the moment when arrest threatens, he flees to France, where he joins the units of the semi-legal Foreign Legion. With the idea that after completing his training, he will go to help his homeland. The drastic training takes place in the African desert. Unbearable heat and sand everywhere one looks. On top of that, intrigues, deceit, and a fight for survival. Filip Jánský drew from his own experiences while writing the book. It was he who, as a young man, fled from the impending occupation. After his time in the African unit of the Foreign Legion, he moved to England, where he joined the Royal Air Force and became one of the most successful air gunners in the RAF. He was severely wounded twice and was saved by emergency landings eight times. His experiences from the war years were later processed into his legendary novel Heaven's Riders.
Fortress in the Desert closely precedes the war years. It complements and clarifies the atmosphere in Europe before the outbreak of World War II and provides a vivid description of the functioning of unofficial military units, all in a masterful...
