Description
The first utopian novel by Čapek about the invention of a machine for harnessing energy, which, in addition to other forms of energy, releases 'the absolute' - God, causing upheavals in the feelings and thoughts of individuals and nations. The merit of the work remains its critique: a critique of nationalism, clericalism, and the social system on which the author stood. ***** The Factory of the Absolute was published in book form in 1922, with the work appearing in a feuilleton format in Lidové noviny from 1921 to 1922. Čapek was undoubtedly impacted by the astonishing development of war technology. The popularized yet vulgarized 'atomic theory' led him to the idea that after the total burning of matter, nothing would remain but God. That God does not necessarily have to manifest as a benevolent and creative being is another distinctly Čapek idea. The novel (more of a cycle of feuilletons) ends with a rather unconvincing vision of universal reconciliation. ***** A very contemporary theme. ***** Length: 6 hours 2 minutes
