With the approaching autumn of the year 1139, the city of Shrewsbury on the border of England and Wales hosts a famous wedding. The domineering lord Huon de Domville is to marry the meek lady Iveta de Massard – and it is a strange marriage. Even Cadfael, on his way to St. Giles' hospital for the incurably ill, cannot help but notice that the groom is already quite faded, while the bride is barely of age, yet with a hefty inheritance from the most valiant crusader.
