The famous annual market, held every summer under the patronage of Cadfael's Benedictine Abbey, drew crowds from far and wide to Shrewsbury. Here, one can buy all sorts of rare fabrics and delicacies, trinkets, a monkey in a tavern – or a dagger in the back. Just the night before the event, Master Thomas, a luxury goods merchant from Bristol, was attacked, and now he floats face up in the River Severn. The mayor's son is suddenly under suspicion, having quarreled with him over tariffs, which have long put the town and the abbey at odds, although this is likely not the main lead. Who did the domineering Thomas step on the toes of, and why is someone persistently rummaging through his boat, even though the merchant's corpse lies in the morgue and the young man is locked up? The inquisitive Cadfael must uncover the motive before the merchants disperse, keeping in mind that appearances can be deceiving. What about Thomas's beautiful niece and heiress, the embodiment of innocence yet so secretive that only a sharp-eyed detective in a robe might notice? After all, the strangled glovemaker from another stall and the slain squire from the retinue of a present nobleman suggest that in the harsh terrain of the Middle Ages, there is more at stake.
