Some men from the Scottish medical dynasty of the Coles possess the ability to instinctively sense when death is approaching. Among them is Rob J. Cole, who joined the first white settlers in the originally Indian territory of Illinois in the second half of the 19th century. In the newly established settlement of Holden's Ferry, a handful of residents are at the mercy of harsh nature, accidents, and deadly epidemics. The work, spanning four decades of American history, was awarded the J. F. Cooper Prize for Best Historical Novel and received a nomination for the Italian Premio Seleziones.
