Description
When a poisoner lurks around the corner, let us ask who benefits from it... The medievally weathered Brother Cadfael – herbalist, healer, and open-minded – is solving his third case right within the walls of his monastery in Shrewsbury. In the post-war December of 1138, the murder of landowner Bonel, who sought refuge with the Benedictines for his remaining days in exchange for properties that the order would later take over, did not contribute to the tranquility of the local monks. It could have been expedited, thus someone slipped him a poisoned thigh. Cadfael embarks on an investigation not only because lunch was enhanced by a paste made from the poisonous herb monkshood, which he recently concocted for the hospital, but also because the widow is his long-lost love from youth. The poisoner clearly struck on the path from the kitchen to the old man's chamber, from which the only window leads, but did he seriously emerge from the ranks of ecclesiastical hypocrites? The complicated inheritance matters within the deceased's family are also suspicious, as he was not exactly a saint. This is the third case in the historical detective series featuring Brother Cadfael, brilliantly portrayed by Derek Jacobi in the British television series. And when the monk detective pieces together the clues and comes face to face with the murderer, he must also consider that it is the gracious Christmas season...
