Prázdniny s Julií - CDmp3 (Čte Alena Vránová)

This Czech-language MP3 audiobook, read by Alena Vránová, follows Julie, the orphaned niece of Mr Bouček and the living embodiment of his idea of a life tragedy. Although she attends a boarding school in Prague, she spends her two-month summer holiday, apart from Sundays, at her uncle’s villa in Doušovice. Peaceful and single, at least until then, Mr Bouček has his own ideas about how a young girl should look and behave, but Julie meets neither expectation. She is useful in only one respect: with unerring certainty, she can extinguish even the strongest ardour of marriage-minded young women and even drive them into open flight. After Mr Bouček voluntarily clears out one beautiful summer day before Julie’s birthday party, full of Alíks and Milans, he returns home engaged, giving his niece a new problem to deal with, to her amusement and outrage. With the help of her dazzling accomplice, Julie devises a plan to resolve the delicate situation, though not in a particularly elegant manner according to Mr Bouček, and to get something out of it as well. This comic novel by the author of Eva tropí hlouposti and Taková normální rodinka is full of situational humour and sharply crafted dialogue. Fan Vavřincová herself considered Holidays with Julie her favourite of her stories.
