People come, toil, and leave, but the houses remain. And hope with them. The baroque house on Dolní Street, just below the square, has taken on the role of storyteller of the saga of unassuming giants who beautified the potato-growing small town in the heart of Czechia. Over three centuries, its sturdy walls have housed a number of entrepreneurs, sharing moments of happiness and bitter tragedies with them. In the 1920s, it was purchased by businessman Vlkovský, who established a grocery store sought after by customers from the surrounding area. However, his close friends and acquaintances from Brod do not live on an island beyond the reach of malicious history and are not immune to the gossip that is everywhere like wasps. And when self-proclaimed heralds of progress emerge after the war, the nationalized store U Vlků faces survival in a socialist communal system, where everything is supposedly everyone's and the tomorrows are so bright that citizens cast their eyes down to the ground. Yet hope dies last. When the youngest generation takes over the storytelling from the restituted house and brings it into the whirlwinds of the 21st century, it will be confirmed that the salt of this land is not grandiloquent phrases, but only diligent people.
