A ghost of real socialism haunts Prague. But for some, its antics are of no concern. In the 1980s, freedom was much more than a recognized necessity, and so a few individuals on the fringes of society formed a surrogate family in a raw materials collection center in Prague's Vysočany. Under the protection of its boss nicknamed Fabrikant, Beny also sleeps here, having escaped from an abusive father and just outsmarted the green brains at the draft commission. But how does the semi-world of his acquaintances from the periphery compare to the idleness sanctioned by the antics in the factory, where this young man on the brink of adulthood systematically wastes time just to avoid being tagged with Article 203 on parasitism? And so Beny, along with the entire ČKD, pretends to work, which supposedly humanizes according to Marxists, while also photographing everything he sees in the factory operations and in the workers' colony awaiting demolition. This schemer with a finger on the trigger is not Hrabal's storyteller dragged into production as part of class struggle, yet he speaks just as vividly on behalf of those who have not become bitter.
