Dogs have been companions to humans since the late Stone Age, and especially today, it can sometimes be difficult to determine who is walking whom. Mackenzi Lee has decided to summarize the process of their domestication from prehistoric caves to complete domestication in suburban villas. She amusingly explores not only the role of mutts, pups, and mixed breeds in the establishment of the Reformation, the discovery of gravity, or the invention of the telephone, but also the everyday lives of service dogs, film dogs, frontline dogs, and even those released into space. She documents the emergence of the first shelters for homeless animals, but does not hesitate to deliver a slap when our arrogant breed attempted to harm the mute creatures through vivisection in the style of I.P. Pavlov. From the colorful history of coexistence between humans and their greatest friends, it becomes clear that human mentality usually progresses through trial and error, while the loyalty of our four-legged companions often extends beyond the grave. Someone simply has to be wiser and more tolerant. After all, life – sometimes a real dog itself – is better endured in pairs, so that it is worth more than just a bark.
