Description
They must spy on spies. And uncover the mole without revealing themselves. The fiasco of Operation Testimony in normalized Czechoslovakia hints to the top brass of London’s MI6 that something is amiss inside. In the early 1970s, a double agent, or 'mole,' controlled by Moscow wreaks havoc at the headquarters of their intelligence service. The new collective leadership of the institution therefore calls upon a person who was previously undesirable: the prematurely retired, betrayed by his wife, yet seasoned Cossack George Smiley. It is up to him to investigate, with ant-like diligence and bulldog tenacity, to whom the threads of betrayal lead. A spy fresco from the era of classic telephones, microfilms, and dead letterboxes, where ordinary agents earn their living in a much more prosaic way than the supermen from Bond films, exposes the machinery of the intelligence center affectionately nicknamed Circus. Smiley and his team have no choice but to unleash a series of maneuvers, as everything suggests that the threads of conspiracy lead to one of their superiors... The most famous novel of the genre was adapted into film for the second time in 2011, featuring Gary Oldman, Toby Jones, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy in leading roles. The film by Swede Tomas Alfredson, with impressive Nordic-style production, however, begins with a blunder in Hungary, unlike the original.
