The provincial town, thanks to ambitious merchants like Jan Born and Martin Nedobyl, and under the influence of the industrial revolution, slowly transforms into a true Czech metropolis. However, the end of the 1860s brings a series of significant historical events – a lost war with Prussia, the Austro-Hungarian Compromise – as well as numerous dramatic moments in the lives of the protagonists of the novel, whose colorful fates the author depicts with impressive knowledge of the period's conditions and the desired ironic distance.
