Description
A reed boat rocks on the surface of the Nile. What gift from the gods do Senmut, a physician for the poor in Thebes, and his wife Kipa find inside? The foundling becomes their only son and grows into a gifted boy longing for a military career. After meeting a veteran, however, Sinuhe follows in his father’s footsteps and studies medicine at a temple school. In the House of Life, he becomes a skilled physician and is summoned to the pharaoh’s court as an assistant to the royal trepaner. When the old and sick Amenhotep III dies after a risky procedure, Sinuhe becomes the one who is alone. The inexperienced young man succumbs to the charms of a beautiful priestess, sacrifices everything for her, and begins a series of reckless decisions with far-reaching consequences, bringing self-contempt, poverty, exile and bloodshed in holy wars. The physician’s journey, during which he earns renown despite adversity, does not end in Syria, Babylon, the lands of Mitanni and Chatti, or even Crete. Sinuhe returns to the Egyptian cults and deeds for which he often bears personal responsibility. This Czech-language recording presents the most successful novel by the modern Finnish classic, portraying conditions in Egypt under the 18th Dynasty in the 14th century BC.
