Description
Fear may influence a man, but self-confidence fights against fear. Uhtred of Bebbanburg was born in the 9th century, when his native Britain was ravaged by the invasions of marauding Vikings. His life turned upside down after his brother and father, a Northumbrian nobleman, were killed by bloodthirsty Danes. The fearless orphan was forcibly adopted by the murderer of his loved ones – Count Ragnar the Fearless – and raised in the spirit of Viking customs. Although the young man never severed ties with his countrymen, he long hesitates about where he truly belongs. Initially, he fights alongside the Danes, but later he enters the service of King Alfred the Great, the last British monarch still resisting the onslaught of northern raiders. With the assembled ranks of Britons, he faces the greatest attack of sea marauders and awaits his toughest task yet: to stand for the first time in the shield wall and measure strength against the most powerful Viking, Ubbe. The BBC has produced a successful television series based on the book, starring Alexander Dreymon. Length of recording: 15 hours 4 minutes
