Can a broken hyoid bone be considered the signature of a serial killer? The unresolved death of twenty-year-old Lucie Martinová, a beloved daughter from a good family, represents the sixth of seven cases of unsolved murders that became the subject of a bet between Enzo Macleod and journalist Roger Raffin. The victim's bones were found after a long fourteen years in the French department of Lot-et-Garonne, in cracked mud at the bottom of a suddenly dried-up lake. The manner of the girl's strangulation, executed with such force that the hyoid bone in her throat shattered into three pieces, matched the style of the then-infamous serial killer Blanco, who, however, had an irrefutable alibi for the critical time. Or is something else at play? Enzo sets out once again to search for long-buried clues to convict the murderer, even though he could never have imagined in his worst nightmares the dramas his investigation would unleash and what all he would uncover during his search...
