In the spring of 1945, as the distant sound of cannon fire rumbles from the front, even the heartless guards here suddenly feel the pressure, as the Americans have crossed the Rhine and the raging Hitler has condemned Germany to death. The situation in the camp becomes more tense by the day, and prisoner 509 has no choice but to believe in a glimmer of hope that he will see liberation. How can he strengthen it? He could earn better food in the infirmary, but there, brutal experiments are still being conducted. He could sell an unregistered gold tooth or bet on a tale that he once had an account in Switzerland, hoping to gain the protection of a greedy guard. But who knows if that would work.
