Description
Fifteen-year-old Michael is helped in his troubles by Hanna, a woman a generation older, and her selfless gesture leads to a passionate affair lasting several months. When the young man, now a law student, witnesses the trial meant to punish a guard from a Nazi concentration camp, he is astonished to find his former lover and mentor sitting in the defendant's dock. Hanna defends herself rather clumsily in court, and Michael struggles to understand what she had concealed about her past – ultimately, even with the knowledge of an important circumstance, he does not speak in her favor. What else will the unpredictable woman, who loved it when he read to her after making love, surprise the hero with? The prose, narrated in the male first-person perspective, contemplates the question of German guilt for the crimes of World War II against the backdrop of a fateful love: it reveals the differing viewpoints of the generation of perpetrators and the confusion of their children and grandchildren. The 2008 novella was adapted into a film by British director Stephen Daldry in a German-American co-production, featuring Kate Winslet, David Kross, and Ralph Fiennes in leading roles. Narrator: Jan Šťastný Duration: 5 hours 36 minutes
