Description
Kazuo Ishiguro's most famous novel, Nobel Prize winner in Literature 2017 Mr. Stevens was a loyal, devoted, respectful, and meticulous butler at Darlington Hall his entire life. However, his conception of conscientious service results in a wall of restraint, behind which he never dared to express even the most basic emotions. When his long-time employer sells his estate to wealthy Americans, Stevens attempts to recap his life, which he proudly laid on the altar of an abstract ideal. Until now, he has not dared to reflect on what he has actually served tirelessly. The novel won the Man Booker Prize. A film adaptation of the same name was made based on the novel (directed by James Ivory, 1993) starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
