Ten-year-old Melanie lives with other children in a prison on a military base, where she is educated under strict supervision. The above-average intelligent girl loves ancient Greek myths and considers her adored teacher, Miss Justineau, her soulmate. However, she despises the ruthless Sergeant Parks, who watches over the children like a jailer. Just like Dr. Caldwell, who occasionally has one of her classmates brought to the lab, from which they never return. The little girl does not remember ever knowing a world other than the dungeon of the base surrounded by a devastated landscape, where, like the rest of the country, the hungry – cannibalistic monsters – reign, stopping at nothing in their hunt for human flesh. When the base is attacked, Melanie, Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks, Dr. Caldwell, and Private Gallagher manage to escape. Together, they set out on a journey to the Lighthouse, the last place in Britain that has managed to remain free from the infection. But will they want Melanie at the Lighthouse when she experiences a desperate hunger around people that she has never felt before?
