Chinese detective Li Jen, along with American forensic doctor Margaret Campbell, investigates the murder of a high-ranking scientist whose charred body was found in a park in Beijing. On the night the man died, two other murders occurred that are mysteriously linked to his death. Detective Li feels he must race against time and that his Chinese thoroughness will be of no use this time. Reluctantly, he asks Margaret for help, who specializes in charred victims. However, from the beginning, there is tension between the two 'reluctant colleagues': the sarcastic pathologist masks her experienced trauma and uncertainty regarding cultural differences with cynicism, while the proper Li hides his sensitivity and is irritated by the arrogance of the foreigner unfamiliar with local customs. However, from the moment they meet at the autopsy of the murdered scientist, their fates become inseparably intertwined, just like the murders they are investigating.
