Description
The most significant landmark of Chlumec nad Cidlinou - the Karlova Koruna Castle - was built as a representative residence by Count František Ferdinand Kinský, the highest chancellor and huntsman of the Kingdom of Bohemia, between 1721 and 1723. The plans were developed by Giovanni Santini-Aichl, one of the most prominent Baroque architects of the time, and the construction was led by another well-known builder of the late Baroque, F. M. Kaňka. The castle, which still forms a striking and far-visible landmark of the Polabí landscape, was from the beginning used for the noble representation of its owners. It received part of its name from Emperor Charles VI, who visited the grand new building in 1723, shortly after he was crowned in Prague. The second part of the name derives from the floor plan chosen by the builders. The structure itself resembles the shape of a royal crown, which is reflected in the interior spaces of the castle. These consist of two large social halls surrounded by nine additional salons. With its unusual architectural division, the builders achieved perfect spatial continuity of the individual castle rooms without the use of corridors. The high standard of the castle is complemented by a spacious English park with rare specimens and a showcase of a French Baroque garden with an orangery. Not even the Karlova Koruna Castle...
