Description

The Baroque, Rococo-modified Jemniště Castle is located about 10 kilometers southwest of the town of Vlašim, in the Benešov district of the Central Bohemian Region. The first documented residence of the Lords of Jemniště was a fortress from the 14th century. In the 18th century, the estate was acquired by František Adam of Trauttmansdorff, who had a more comfortable residence built to the west of the old fortress, which is today's castle. Its construction took place in the first half of the 18th century, undoubtedly according to the design of the prominent Czech Baroque architect František Maxmilián Kaňka, who also collaborated with the painter Václav Vavřinec Reiner, who contributed to the decoration of the Chapel of St. Joseph. F.M. Kaňka was interestingly one of the builders of the Clementinum in Prague. The fortress then became a residence for the lords' employees. After a fire in 1754, the interiors of the castle were modified, and it was from this period that the paintings in the main hall by Felix Antonín Scheffler date. In 1773, the castle was acquired through marriage by Count Jindřich Rottenhan, under whom the Jemniště estate became an important center for the cotton industry. Rottenhan also contributed to the architectural modifications of the castle in the Neoclassical style and established a large natural English park north of the castle building, abolishing the style of the then French garden. After World War II, the estate was transferred to the state.
