Scharfenstein Castle In the valley of the Zschopau River, the lords of Waldenburg established a castle around 1250 on a rock surrounded by the riverbed on three sides. It was intended to protect the path from their main residence in Wolkenstein to the lower parts of Saxony. The castle remained in the possession of its founders until the end of the 15th century, after which it changed hands several times, including the margravial Wettin family. From 1492, the castle belonged to the von Einsiedel family. Abraham von Einsiedel initiated a Gothic-Renaissance reconstruction around 1530, which gave it its current appearance. While preserving defensive elements, the castle acquired sufficiently comfortable and spacious living quarters. The reconstruction was completed with the construction of a late Renaissance gate at the eastern end of the stone bridge 100 years later. The castle remained the property of various branches of the Einsiedel family until 1931. On the night of June 1-2, 1921, it was struck by a fire, after which it was repaired in a historical spirit according to the design of architect Bodo Erhardt in 1922-23 (see also the entry on Czocha). The last private owner of the castle was industrialist Fritz Eutitz from 1931 to 1945.
