Description
Kriebstein Castle belonged as a residential seat of the Beerwald family even before the year 1400, along with the towns of Waldheim and Hartha. The first mention of the construction of a residential tower as a separate building by Dietrich von Beerwald dates back to 1384. After Dietrich's death in 1408, the estate passed into the hands of his widow Elizabeth and after her death to their daughter Clare as a lifetime dowry. Since 1465, the castle has been in the possession of Hugold III. Schleinitz – marking the beginning of a second important epoch in the architectural history of the castle. In 1471, Schleinitz commissioned Arnold von Westfalen, a builder from Albrechtsburg, for major modifications and expansions. A dance hall and a well were created in the newly built wing, and a new kitchen building was added to the back of the castle. After the death of Hugold Schleinitz in 1490, there was frequent change of owners without significant construction interventions. In the last third of the 17th century, during the reign of the Schönbergs, construction activity was renewed, the residential tower was raised, the gatehouse wing was added, and a mezzanine was inserted. In 1825, the castle was acquired by Hans Carl von Arnim, and under the guidance of Moritz Carl Haenel, significant changes in the neo-Gothic style took place between 1866 and 1868.
