Description

This paper model kit presents Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou Castle, an extensive Baroque complex considered one of the largest and most monumental castles in Europe. The grounds include St Margaret’s Church and are surrounded by large, beautiful gardens. A medieval fortress built by the lords of Lomnice originally stood on the site. Jaroměřice, which was held by the sovereign, was controlled for most of the 14th and 15th centuries by the Lichtenburks, who owned the fortress and estate. In 1543, Meziříčští of Lomnice acquired the estate from its next owner, Jan of Pernštejn, and rebuilt the fortress as a three-wing Renaissance chateau, whose masonry survives in the present building. After the estate was confiscated from the Rechenbergs of Želetice for their participation in the anti-Habsburg rebellion, it passed to the Questenbergs. In 1700, Jan Adam of Questenberg commissioned the Austrian architect Jakob Prandtauer to transform the Renaissance residence into its breathtaking Baroque form. The chateau was richly decorated, and renowned artists of the time were invited to complete its outstanding artistic composition. The Renaissance garden was also converted into a French Baroque garden. As a lover of music and theatre, Adam of Questenberg made the chateau famous for its lively cultural life. A theatre, music and dance hall, library, gallery and Chinese cabinet were built in the eastern part of the side wing and remain part of the present tour route. The castle’s later history includes frequently changing owners, and in 1945 it became state property. Its interiors contain period musical instruments, furnishings connected with its rich musical life and life-sized portraits of ancestors. The grounds include a French garden and an English park with a natural theatre and sculptures depicting mythological subjects.
