Description
A historical novel set in the 1680s in northeastern Moravia, where the Inquisition was rampant and a mass trial of alleged witches took place. The novel is based on extensive archival material from those years. The trial outwardly pretended to be a campaign against black magic, but in reality, it served the shameless enrichment of the inquisitors. It describes the drastic methods used during interrogations, etc. At the center is the fate of the dean of Šumperk, Lautner, who was the only priest to openly oppose the Inquisition and becomes one of its last victims.
