Description
A four-part epic series about pashmina wool and its embargoed variety shah-tus, for whose illegal ownership one can go to prison in Himalayan countries. The series deals with the endangered species of Tibetan antelope, which must be killed to provide the fine and rare underbelly fur. Filmmakers follow the entire process of weaving, dyeing, and embroidering expensive shawls. It begins in the Buddhist Ladakh, where the wool is found, and ends in Islamic Kashmir, where it is processed. The film mentions a number of wars that have been fought over the precious wool in the past and describes the difficult trans-Himalayan trade and its arteries: the Himalayan caravan routes. Viewers will journey across high and dangerous passes of the Himalayan ridge and learn much about the courage and toughness of ancient caravan participants as well as their customs and religions.
