Description

A classic documentary from an expedition to the uninhabited and remote area of Dolpo in western Nepal, inspired by the famous book by Peter Matthiessen, Snow Leopard. The inhabitants of Dolpo, known as Bhotias, are of Tibetan origin and Buddhist religion. Dolpo belonged to Tibet until the mid-18th century when the Gurkhas conquered the area for Nepal. Today, one can find an untouched, pure Tibetan culture and a number of monasteries that played a significant role in the development of Tibetan Buddhism and in the mutual relations between Nepal and Tibet. Dolpo was not affected by the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which caused immeasurable damage in Tibet itself. The film provides insightful information about the history and culture of the area while also lightly commenting on the hardships and joys of the eight-member expedition.
