Its central prayer, AVE MARIA, holds a significant place in the musical history of the Marian tradition. The text consists of a combination of two excerpts from the Gospel of Luke, and in the late Middle Ages, it was supplemented with a concluding plea and incorporated into the Roman Breviary in 1568.
