The fifth installment in the Nejisté jistoty cycle captures Vladimír Merta in a period of reckoning and doubt. Are these still uncertain certainties, or have they become certain uncertainties? The songs form an open conversation, without masks and with an emphasis on honesty and personal experience, from “Heaven Won’t Wait” and the provocative “Miss Anarchy” to the closing “Virus,” which may resonate more strongly today than its author originally intended. Merta turns primarily to himself in these songs, drawing on the cultural and spiritual traditions that have shaped him over the years, as well as on his musical influences, including Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Joan Baez. He is not searching for universal truth, but offering a personal statement. The result is music that is not always simple or unambiguous, yet is all the more authentic for it. Merta’s lyrics are often described as complex, and perhaps rightly so: these are not songs for a single listen. Their layered nature means that every replay reveals something new.
