Description

The Moravian group Betula pendula became a sensation at rock and folk festivals in the late 1980s, released a small record, and spread further recordings on a samizdat cassette. During the 1990s, they played in a reduced lineup, but their early recordings remain unmatched in many ways. Now, they are being released collectively on the compact disc Cesta. Jiří Černý wrote about them in 1988: "Starting with the musical adaptation of Blake's poem The Tiger, each of their songs lives in its own world, decipherable not by logic, but by a sense of beauty in a chain of verbal and sound metaphors. Nowhere is there a story, a melody, a self-sufficient tonal brilliance that we could latch onto and not let go. Only the divided space of distant and close guitars, keyboards, trumpet, dulcimer, and programmed drums. Chinese ink imagery in Cesta, the energy of fateful Návrat, the dreaminess of Pasolini's inspiration in Teorema. If not for the immediate effect, then certainly for the individuality, the songs of Jan Šoltis (music, incantatory singing, acoustic guitar, etc.), Hana Kocourková (lyrics), and three players place themselves in the value line Andrtová - Bittová - original Máma Bubo - Jablkoň."
