The scrap yard of the Kladno steelworks became a labor camp for those whom communist society had cast to the very edge and intended to reshape 'like that steel.' Here gathered a prosecutor who refused to understand that the law should submit to totalitarian power, an Adventist who refused to work on Saturdays, a philosopher unwilling to confine his thinking to new doctrines, a saxophonist whose instrument was condemned as a bourgeois relic, and many others. And although dressed in old rags and stripped of their original lives, they seem happier and more content than those who sent them here... The film satirizing the political repression of the 1950s was locked away in a vault for twenty years right after its completion. The premiere of the film The Larks on a String took place only in 1990. The digital restoration of this film, funded by Mrs. Milada Kučerová and Mr. Eduard Kučera, was carried out by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in collaboration with the National Film Archive and the State Cinematography Fund in partnership with UPP and Soundsquare in 2021.
