Description

The Panopticon of Old Criminal Stories (1968) is the title of the first of three collections of detective stories by Jiří Marek set in the environment of interwar Prague. The stories were based on real events that caused sensations in the old days. They involve the cases of Chief Police Commissioner Knotek, his successor Commissioner Vacátek, and members of the murder squad, Inspectors Bouše, Brůžek, and Mrázek, which were later also captured in famous television adaptations in the series Sinful People of Prague (1968, directed by Jiří Sequens) and The Panopticon of Prague (1988, directed by Antonín Moskalyk), where after the death of Commissioner Vacátek, Commissioner Korejs appeared. Four feature films featuring Commissioner Vacátek (J. Marvan) were also made in 1970 and 1971 (The Party of the Beautiful Dragoon, The Little Flower and the Umbrella, The Death of the Black King, Murder at the Excelsior Hotel). Through the author's gentle humor, kindness, compassion for human sins, and his linguistic mastery, the nostalgic world of the then metropolis and its peripheries comes to life, along with a number of distinctive characters.
