Description
It is said that a person becomes wiser and understands themselves only in old age – in other words, that in later years they find themselves. But what is the main character to do when he literally finds himself? Yes, the emeritus associate professor of Czech studies, Igor Jurášek, would never have imagined in his darkest dreams that when he returns to the town of Staré Rasošky, where he once began his teaching career after many decades, he would find a corpse behind a hedge… himself! ***** After the initial shock, as a law-abiding man, he goes to report the discovery at the local police station. However, such a convoluted case quickly escalates to the highest levels of the police. The suspect (just like the 'war with the Turk') must be, so it becomes the unfortunate discoverer himself. The old man, haunted by guilt towards his devoted wife Hedvika, to whom he – to put it mildly – was not always entirely faithful, towards a whole host of other women he could not resist, and ultimately towards several colleagues or friends whose journey to the other world he could not (as he accuses himself) prevent, turns to a recap of his own life. In memories and in dreams that haunt him, he dives into the depths of his soul and 'miracles happen.' Could it be that Igor Jurášek has finally matured? ***** As is often the case with Čepelka - the prose writer…
