Description

The author is among the classics of world satirical literature and also a master of the short story. He can be placed alongside a number of English and English-speaking humorists, such as his contemporaries O. Henry (William Sydney Porter), Jerome Klapka Jerome, Stephen Leacock, or Dorothy Parker. Following them were P.G. Wodehouse and James Thurber. From this list of illustrious names, Saki can be immediately included. His biography reveals that he spent his early childhood in India, traveled a considerable part of Europe with his father as a young man, including a brief stay in Prague, and after a serious illness settled in London, where he began to build a career as a journalist. He wrote for newspapers (Daily Express, Morning Post). In the Westminster Gazette, he started publishing Alice in Westminster, a series of quarters in which he mockingly satirized the British government's approach during the Boer War using the method of parodic continuation of Carroll's famous Alice in Wonderland. Meanwhile, Munro began publishing short stories. Even his first collection, Reginald (1904), features Saki's characteristic hero, a sharp and socially irresponsible young man who enjoys entertaining himself at the expense of the settled, respectable surroundings. The collection of stories with the Czech title Treatment by Restlessness was published here...
