Description
Pink Bud, How Jeník Tended the Grasshopper, Peter's Cap, The Twelve Months, The Black Magician, Beautiful Mahulena Božena Němcová was deeply interested in folklore and folk traditions, with the peak of her work consisting of short stories and longer prose from rural settings, but also folk fairy tales. Notably, there are seven volumes of National Fairy Tales and Legends and ten volumes of Slovak Fairy Tales and Legends, where the well-known Slovak fairy tale The Twelve Months is preserved, for example. From these collections, we have selected six fairy tales, most of which are among the lesser-known. However, some have also been adapted into films, such as The Black Magician (starring Jiří Bartoška) or The Dream of the Beautiful Maiden based on the fairy tale Beautiful Mahulena (directed by Ludvík Ráža, starring Mária Podhradská and Jan Čenský, music by Petr Hapka) and most recently The Twelve Months (directed by Karel Janák, starring Roman Vojtek and Marie Markusová, music by Lukáš Gregor Brzobohatý). Not only film screenwriters but also Božena Němcová herself always aimed for her own retelling of folk fairy tales, not just capturing the original form of the fairy tale motif in the spirit of the national revival. In her fairy tales, good always triumphs over evil, and they embody the wisdom of many human generations.
