Description
This drama and thriller by Jan Procházka and Karel Kachyňa belongs to the so-called vault films, made between 1968 and 1970 but not released for distribution until twenty years after their production. It takes aim at the practices of representatives of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the government during the 1950s and 1960s, when the nonsensical rule “Trust, but verify” applied even among comrades in high positions. Listening devices were therefore installed in the government villas of ministers and other leading figures to monitor them even in their private lives. The film is both a shocking testimony and a forceful warning. It is in Czech, with Czech subtitles.
