Year 2021... Although technology on Earth has reached its peak, most of the population suffers from serious bodily disorders. A significant pharmaceutical company owns the necessary cure for the malignant disease, but it refuses to provide it. Therefore, a special courier is sent to obtain the secret formula. Johnny Mnemonic (Keanu Reeves) has a microchip implanted in his head, which allows him to transfer an enormous amount of data desperately needed to save humanity. He is pursued by Yakuza agents and a fanatical priest, Preacher (in an unforgettable performance by Dolph Lundgren), but Johnny is determined to fulfill his mission to the fullest. The film is based on a short story by William Gibson, one of the most famous authors of cyberpunk, a genre of sci-fi stories where information technology and artificial intelligence play a central role. In Gibson's work, terms such as virtual reality, cyberspace, and matrix appear for the very first time. It is no coincidence that genre lovers consider this film a precursor to the cult classic MATRIX.
