Description
The blue whale is one of the largest animals on Earth. This remarkable creature has a massive body that can reach around 20–27 metres in length and weigh up to 72–135 tonnes. Its heart weighs as much as a small car. The blue whale feeds mainly on plankton and tiny marine creatures, which it filters through the enormous baleen plates in its mouth. Its migrations across the oceans fascinate scientists and the general public worldwide. Blue whales play a key role in ocean ecosystems and symbolise both the strength and vulnerability of the marine environment.
