Description
The Texas Longhorn bull is a relatively small breed of cattle, weighing 600 kg or more and reaching up to 165 cm at the withers. It has a fairly slender build, long legs and strikingly long, lyre-shaped horns, which can span more than 180 cm in bulls and give the breed its name. Its short coat is usually light brown, often with white spots, although other color patterns also occur. The horns are significant in Texas culture, where ranchers and herd owners traditionally use them to decorate the hoods of their cars. Texas Longhorn cattle are mainly raised for meat, which is lean and low in fat, yet very tasty, with a flavor similar to game. It is widely used in Tex-Mex cuisine, especially for preparing chili con carne.
