Description
The brown bear is a bear species and the only member of its family that has lived, and rarely still lives, in the Czech Republic. It is a powerful animal with strong limbs, large claws measuring 5–10 cm, long fur and a large, round head. It weighs 100–550 kg and can reach 150 cm at the shoulder. When undisturbed by people, it is mainly active during the day, but bears living near humans may become nocturnal. The brown bear is an omnivore whose varied diet includes plant foods such as berries, roots, crops and mushrooms, as well as animal foods, most often fish, insects and small to medium-sized mammals. Despite its reputation as a killer, plant matter makes up as much as 90% of its diet. Cubs are born after a six- to eight-month pregnancy during the winter sleep. Brown bears live for about 20–30 years.
