Description
The Indian gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a critically endangered reptile found in India, where it is considered a sacred animal. Adults reach 3.5–7 metres in length and weigh 160–180 kilograms, although some individuals have reportedly weighed 680–1,000 kg. Their head can measure up to 130 centimetres and ends in jaws almost one metre long, containing more than one hundred very sharp teeth used to obtain food. The teeth of the upper and lower jaws are offset so that they interlock when the jaws close. Their raised eyes sit on top of the head, allowing them to watch their surroundings from beneath the water’s surface while the rest of the body remains submerged. The eyes face sideways, providing a wide field of view without turning the head, and are protected by scaly eyelids and a transparent membrane that covers them underwater.
