The Tornado was designed for the needs of the British, German, and Italian air forces. No aircraft had ever been built so compactly to meet the requirements of the air forces of three advanced NATO armies. The first series of aircraft went into service with the aforementioned air forces and the Royal Saudi Air Force. Tornados formed the vanguard and the first strike force of the allies in the Gulf War, ready to fulfill the required tasks at any time. For the needs of the armies, multiple versions were created to meet the demanding requirements of military commanders. The Tornado IDS – strike bomber is capable of literally copying the terrain thanks to its low-level flight system and can dive into steep valleys with a payload of bombs just above the treetops. There, it can complete its missions and return to the starting base with a sufficient reserve. The Tornado ECR – version for electronic warfare. The aircraft is literally packed with electronic devices and, along with more powerful engines, is capable of performing indispensable tasks. The Tornado ADV – interceptor with the ability to stop an attacker right at the edge of its territorial airspace under all weather conditions. For these purposes, it is equipped with a powerful radar capable of monitoring the terrain both in front of and below the aircraft, and thanks to the use of dropable external fuel tanks, it has a sufficiently long operational range.
