A thrilling detective story set in Rudolfine Prague. The daughter of the alchemist Giovanni da Ponte, Fiorella, along with her friends, investigates two murders that occurred beyond the borders of the Old Town, at the Nusle cemetery. The victims bear marks of vampire bites, and a vampire has also been sighted at the cemetery. The local priest is a learned man and does not believe in the forces of hell, yet he is obliged to call the Inquisition... The mere mention of the word Inquisition sends chills down many spines. They envision the dim light of torture chambers, terrifying torture devices, and the horrific practices of inquisitors. Although many rumors are associated with this ecclesiastical institution that has been active in Europe since the 12th century, it undoubtedly had on its conscience the lives of innocents who died a shameful and painful death at the burning stake or in the dark dungeons of prisons. In the Czech lands, the Inquisition operated since the time of Přemysl Otakar II, when heretical teachings of the Waldensians also penetrated here. For the judiciary of the Middle Ages and partly of the modern era, a heretic was placed on par with a murderer. Although he did not kill anyone, he committed a crime perhaps even worse, as his seductions killed the soul. Victims of the Inquisition often found themselves before its tribunal on accusations that could have stemmed from nothing more than malicious intent, but just as often from superstition.
