Description
Two young couples from Reykjavik set off on a journey across the inhospitable plains of central Iceland. On the sandy plains north of the Vatnajökull glacier, they veer off the road in the fog and stumble upon a house in the wilderness, a kind of fortress with no connection to the outside world, inhabited by a strange old woman and her husband, where they carefully lock the doors every evening. During their involuntary stay in the house, their past is revealed in a new light, and it becomes increasingly unclear where they should look for the enemy. The book uniquely intertwines elements of a psychological thriller with a scathing commentary on the contemporary social changes that occurred in Iceland as a result of the financial crisis in 2008. This sophisticated, evocative, and excellently written story is one of the most remarkable works of contemporary Nordic literature.
