Their balloon is driven over the sea, where it is destroyed, and the fugitives find refuge on a deserted island in the South Pacific, 2000 km from the nearest inhabited place, the islands of Polynesia. In honor of American President and anti-slavery fighter Abraham Lincoln, they name it Lincoln Island. The castaways gradually build a comfortable living environment here using their extensive scientific and technical knowledge. Later, they are joined by a former convict, Ayrton, whom the castaways find on a nearby island, Tabor. The character of the dying Captain Nemo, whose submarine Nautilus has a reference to the novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea...
